You people are gonna make yourselves sick

Another day, another campaign ad from a backwater district in a red state using the language of disgust and outrage toward Donald Trump to ask for money. Like, literally just "Donald Trump sucks, vote for me." Not even "my opponent approves of Donald Trump."

The "disgust" language probably should be disturbing, because when it was primarily a rhetorical tic of reactionaries, we were  told it was a fascist tell: That good progressives don't use words like "disgusting" because that's trafficking in reactionary, eliminationist sentiment. Now it's just another day in my inbox.

But it's not disturbing because it's just more output from the mercenary political professionals class, and if they're using it with "nationalize every backwater election" email distribution dumpster diving, it's too late to worry about it.

When I get these texts I just reply "STOP." When I get the mails, I step through the unsubscribe process. Each campaign season gets a little less bad than the one before it. Now that I have a mail service that makes it easy to set up burner addresses, I'll start using them if I want to donate to a local campaign or a "cause" charity.

And though it's not disturbing, it's a little saddening, because it is working on someone out there. I can't imagine what the inboxes of regular, non-self-protecting donors look like with the constant pleading and outrage language; and the oblique assertion that everything is your business and your problem.
